Record Questions Go to the Custodian
For a specific Oakland record, use the office that created or maintains it. The address trail belongs with the Property Gateway, tax system, and local assessor. Recorded instruments belong with the Register of Deeds. Sixth Circuit and probate copies follow the court clerk’s procedures. Historical directories and newspapers are held through the historical society, libraries, and archives. The links in the Oakland records offices section identify the appropriate starting point.
- For an address or a street, use the Oakland street directory route.
- For cataloged historical volumes, use the Oakland directory book.
- For one dated name connection, use the Oakland resident lookup.
- For a county record not available online, submit a narrow request under Michigan FOIA, MCL 15.231–15.246, when that statute applies.
